Egg protector!

Our team went through step 1 (define our goals and objectives), 2 (determine our resources), 4 (make a tactical plan) and 5 (Implement the plan and evaluate results). We knew exactly what our goal was, which is to not break the egg, so our whole plan started from there. We determined our resources (straws and tapes) before we even began planning by checking how strong the straws were, how long the tape was, and how we could use each to cushion the egg’s fall. Using this information we put a plan in place and divided the tasks of who was going to do what parts since we knew we had limited time. I knew dividing up the tasks would be a helpful way to get everyone involved.

We definitely bypassed step 3 (develop several alternative strategies) which was a mistake because we didn’t end up having enough ideas. We ended up having only 2 ideas that ended up being similar enough that we just ended up combined them into one final plan.

While our plan didn’t end up keeping the egg from breaking, I am ultimately satisfied with the group effort and team work. Dividing work during the planning time really helped us succeed in putting our plan in place. While the plan wasn’t successful in the end, I was happy with our execution of it.

  1. I agree bypassing step 3 is a mistake. I am happy that we had done this activity because now I know next time when I plan I should always have several backup plans. People are generally overconfident and overlook the problems. Now this planning process will definitively help me in the future.

  2. lol. it seems that most groups forgot about step 3, needless to say my group forgot that as well. even though our groups didn't have any alternate plans, i don't think it would've made a difference because ultimately, every group had a different engineering for the cushioning and yet none were successful =/. but it's still by far the most interesting lecture I've been to.

  3. Either you worded it too perfectly, or your group was very efficient and organized. Your only flaw seemed to be overlooking step 3. It's ironic because even though most groups bypassed this, my group only focused on step 3...Obviously we failed, as well. We assumed the first 2 steps, did like 85% of our time on step 3, and zoomed past step 4 and 5. But from your post, your group planned relatively well. You're right to be satisfied with your group's efforts.

  4. hey Minhee,
we kind a have same situation in building egg protector, we went through all steps except developing several alternatives. Our team did great job in defining our goal and determining our resources. But we didn't assign specific task to each student so when we actually make the egg protector, our teams were all focusing on how can we build it within the given time. Eventhough we didn't succeed , but it was fun learning and working with small team.
